Interesting locavore Op-Ed in the NYT

There’s an interesting Op-Ed piece in the Times about how the USDA’s staple food subsidy program (corn, wheat, soy) penalizes farmers for leasing fields to local vegetable growers– and how that affects your ability to buy local at your large supermarket, rather than making a separate trip to the farm stand/farmer’s market.

Have you read The Omnivore’s Dilemma yet? I am recommending it to ALL my friends…

Part of the book discusses the hidden costs of the USDA’s staple food subsidy program, including other long term environmental and health costs.
