Sympathy

I know it’s not sympathetic magic,
the way the other burners crackle in time
with the one gas burner I’m lighting,
but it’s nice to think it is.

Wouldn’t it be nice, to have at least one,
if not another three, people who crackled,
who responded in time with your responses,
who truly knew what you were going through?

I don’t need them to burst into flame,
as I sometimes do–
but what if they just felt a wee bit flickery
right before I’m about to go off?

We’re all looking to not be alone
for someone who knows what I’m talking about
for someone who can grab us,
the second before we get hit by that oncoming bus,
to grab that bucket of water
and prevent spontaneous combustion.
